Week 1

Ways to Care for God’s Creation

Throughout the summer we’re going to give you some suggestions for ways that you can better help to take care of the beautiful world that God gave us.

Week 1 – Plant Flowers and other plants to Attract Pollinators

A wonderful and beautiful way to help the earth is to plant flowers in your garden that will attract bees and butterflies to help pollinate the plants.

Some scientists estimate that one out of every three bites of food we eat exists because of animal pollinators like bees, butterflies and moths, birds and bats, and beetles and other insects. But pollinators are in trouble. If they can’t find the right quantity or quality of food (nectar and pollen from blooming plants within flight range) they don’t survive. Right now, there simply aren’t enough pollinator friendly plantings to support pollinators.

The Minnesota Zoo has the following suggestions for planting:

  • Plant wildflowers that are native to your region
  • Choose a variety of plants that bloom from spring to fall
  • Avoid pesticides
  • Choose plants of different heights
