Believe it or not I can still remember what it was like to be a little girl getting ready for kindergarten. I remember that before we got registered, I had to go to get an assessment. I was so nervous and worried. We had to go to a place I had never been before. It was actually in a church basement – but even so, everything seemed so strange and unfamiliar. There were so many people. And I think I was worried that if I didn’t do well maybe they wouldn’t let me go to school!

But my mom held my hand. And just knowing that she was there with me, beside me, holding on to me and keeping me safe made me feel so much better. I could look up to her for reassurance and she would smile at me and squeeze my hand and I knew everything would be ok.

Even now I can remember that the assessment included things like walking on a balance beam, drawing pictures and playing with blocks – and other thing that I enjoyed doing. It wasn’t nearly as scary as I thought it would be. And I got into kindergarten!

This scripture from Isaiah made me think about that.

We know that we are called to do what is right – but sometimes it is hard. Sometimes we don’t know if we can do what we are called to do. But God is with us – holding our hand, reassuring us. And with God by our side we can feel safe and know that we can do what God is asking of us. Don’t be afraid – but look up to the one who holds your hand.
