The translation of the Bible I read translates the second half of this verse as, “understanding begins with knowing the Holy One.” In many ways it feels like God is unknowable. God is so big and powerful that it feels like God is beyond our comprehension. Who am I to say that I know God?
But on the other hand, I realize that the way that we get to know someone is to spend time with them. So, it seems like the way begin to know God is to spend time with God. Just like we can find ourselves being wiser when we spend time with wise people – we can begin to know God and get understanding by spending time with God.
Of course, I will never know all there is to know about God – but from the time that I have spent with God I know that God is loving and accepting and forgiving. I know that God is powerful and majestic and creative. I know that, above all, God is good. And I know that although God is powerful and perfect that God loves the ordinary people in their imperfection and weakness.
Although I will never know all there is to know and understand about God – when I spend time with God and begin to know God more, I also begin to understand who I want to be: a person who tries their imperfect best to love as God has loved.
