As I was driving in to work today the radio host announced that today is National Stress Awareness Day then she played a lovely song by a band called The Head and the Heart called, “Let’s be Still.” Here are some of the lyrics from that song:
The world’s just spinning
A little too fast
If things don’t slow down soon we might not last.
So just for the moment, let’s be still.
I think that’s good advice for all of us. Our lives are often full of stress. We let things overwhelm and worry us. Sometimes the world does seem to be going so fast and we don’t feel like we can slow down. But that’s exactly the time when we should stop for a moment and be still and in that still moment is the time when we should pray.
One of my favorite scriptures is in the book of Philippians. “Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks. And God’s peace, which is so great we cannot understand it, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6-7 (New Century Version)
I used to worry a lot, but now when I worry I remember this verse. I stop for a moment to be still and pray. I bring my worries to God and share my fears and concerns, asking for the help and strength I need. Then I thank God for always being with me and caring for me. After that moment of short prayer I go back to what I was doing. And it’s amazing how different I feel. Just like the scripture says, I suddenly feel myself full of God’s peace, and that moment of stillness begins to fill the rest of my day.
We all have times of stress in our lives, so when that stress begins to overwhelm you – be still for just a moment in prayer and let God’s peace – that is beyond our understanding – keep your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
