Instead of making a New Year’s Resolution this year – maybe try a one-word intention. An intention is a purpose that guides your action. So a one-word intention would mean choosing one word that would help to guide you to a particular purpose.

A resolution is often about trying to reach a goal – but an intention is about how you want to live your life – and to live your life with purpose. For instance, if you have an intention to be helpful, then that is your purpose and it will guide you to do helpful things.

There are so many words that you could choose:

  • Listening
  • Generosity
  • Gratitude
  • Creativity
  • Trusting

Or maybe you could look at Paul’s list of the fruits of the Spirit:

But the Spirit produces the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. – Galatians 5:22-23a (New Century Version)

Which one of these words could give you purpose and guide you to live in a better and fuller way than you did last year? Is there another word that God is giving you? Can you have an intention to be brave, hopeful, encouraging? Listen to God speak to you and think about what might be your intention – your purpose that guides you this year – and see how God can work in your life through one word!
