The words of this prayer were used in the song Day by Day from the musical Godspell, which was based on the Gospel of Matthew. When I was young I loved this musical and knew all of the songs by heart. But Day by Day was my least favorite song. There was nothing wrong with it, it just wasn’t my favorite. I thought it was kind of boring. Because those same words are just repeated over and over again. I think that’s what I didn’t like – all that repetition.
But as I think about those words now, I realize that the repetition is one of the most important and beautiful parts of this song. We are on this journey with God day by day. Every day we get up, live our lives as best we can, then we go to bed and wake up again to do it all over again. Sometimes it is boring. But what a difference it makes if we ask for God’s presence day by day.
Some days we seem to see God everywhere, we follow the path and we feel our love for God fill our hearts. Other days we feel lost and disconnected and it feels like God is hidden from us. But every new day is a part of this journey with God. Every day is an opportunity to start fresh. Every day is a chance see God, love God and follow God.
What a beautiful thing it is day by day, over and over again, to pray for these three things!
